Safeguarding Curriculum

Our Vision

At Leigh Academy Molehill, our curriculum is designed to ensure every pupil, regardless of need or background, acquires the knowledge and skills to become a well-informed, globally aware citizen.

Central to this mission is safety. We empower our pupils with the agency to keep themselves and others safe, providing them with the foundations needed to navigate the modern world and transition successfully to secondary education.

Implementation

Safeguarding is not a standalone subject; it is woven into the fabric of our daily learning. Our core safeguarding themes are delivered through a mapped, transdisciplinary approach:

Our curriculum is mapped to ensure age-appropriate coverage of vital safety themes:

  • PSHE and RSE: Focusing on healthy relationships, mental wellbeing, and physical health.
  • Computing and Online Safety: Navigating the digital world, identifying risks, and protecting personal data.
  • Core Texts: Using high-quality literature to explore complex themes like empathy, boundaries, and resilience.

Specialist Partnerships

To address our local context and provide expert insight, we collaborate with leading external agencies:

    • St Giles Trust: Education on gangs, county lines, and knife crime.
    • Kent Police Prevent Unit: Raising awareness of online grooming and radicalisation.
  • Local Policing and Fire Teams
  • Railway and Road Safety Teams
  • Smoothwall: Providing access to an online mental wellbeing community.
  • NSPCC: Delivering the ‘Speak Out Stay Safe’ and ‘PANTS’ (Underwear Rule) programs.

There are regular lessons and workshops which address how pupils can stay safe, such as e-safety, drug and alcohol workshops, road and rail safety, Scootability, Stranger Danger, NSPCC ‘Pants are Private’, the law, and gangs. These, alongside discrete PSHE lessons, ensure pupils are provided with the skills to keep themselves safe and the knowledge of what to do if they feel they are not.  The wellbeing of staff and pupils is at the forefront of academy life and this is reflected in the calm, purposeful academy environment.

We teach safety through real-world application:

  • Practical Life Skills: From using cutlery safely in the dining hall to navigating busy roads and public transport on school trips.
  • Community Safety: Learning to interact with Safe Strangers (Police, Fire Service) and understanding geography to navigate home safely.
  • Digital Responsibility: Responding in-the-moment to emerging trends or concerns regarding age-restricted apps.
  • Emotional Fortitude: Building the resilience to tackle difficult challenges and the confidence to handle mistakes in a supportive environment.

Measuring Success: Impact

We recognise the success of our safeguarding culture through the voices and actions of our community:
